St Kitts is a stunningly scenic island in the eastern Caribbean, offering a brilliant blend of lush tropical rainforests, golden and black-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, rugged mountains, and plenty of sunshine. It’s the larger of the two islands in the federation of St Kitts and Nevis, with Basseterre as its lively capital. Nevis, just a short boat ride away, is smaller, quieter, and equally charming — together, they offer the best of both worlds.
During my trip, I stayed at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort & Royal Beach Casino, located in North Frigate Bay, which is centrally placed and just a short drive from the airport. The resort was superb — spacious rooms with a West Indian flair, warm hospitality, and excellent amenities made it a great base for exploring the island.
The property includes:
-
Eight restaurants offering a range of cuisine
-
A large pool area set beside a palm-fringed beach
-
An award-winning golf course
-
A tranquil spa and a casino for evening entertainment
Everything you could want in a Caribbean getaway was right there, making it perfect for both relaxation and adventure.
Top Highlights from St Kitts & Nevis
Contents
1. Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Brimstone Hill Fortress is a fascinating and well-preserved military structure that offers a glimpse into the island’s colonial past. Built by the British using African slave labour in the 17th century, it stands as a powerful reminder of the island’s complex history.
Travel tip: Visit on a clear day — the panoramic views over the island and out to sea are phenomenal.
2. Take a Ride on the Scenic Railway
St Kitts is home to one of the few scenic railways in the Caribbean. Originally built to transport sugar cane, the St Kitts Scenic Railway now offers a unique and leisurely way to circle the island’s coastline.
The double-decker train offers open-air views on the top deck and air-conditioned comfort below. The lush landscape, rolling hills, and picturesque villages pass by while a local guide narrates the journey, often accompanied by live music and refreshments.
3. Ziplining Through the Rainforest
Adrenaline seekers will love the Sky Safari zipline adventure, which takes you soaring above the dense rainforest canopy. The zipline circuit includes multiple lines of varying lengths and heights, offering views of the island you just can’t get from the ground.
We even spotted wild vervet monkeys swinging through the trees — a thrilling highlight! The experience starts off nerve-wracking, but by the final line, we were already planning a second go.
4. A Day Trip to Nevis by Catamaran
No visit to St Kitts is complete without hopping over to Nevis. We booked a catamaran day trip, which included a snorkelling stop en route in the warm, clear waters — teeming with vibrant marine life.
Once on Nevis, we headed to the beach near the Four Seasons Resort, relaxed on the soft sands, and indulged in some of the best ice cream we’ve ever had. The island is peaceful, laid-back, and offers the perfect contrast to its livelier sister.
Travel tip: Don’t forget sun protection and your underwater camera for snorkelling — the reef life is spectacular.
5. Relaxing on the Beaches
Whether you’re after adventure or doing absolutely nothing, St Kitts has the perfect beach for you. Choose from:
-
South Friars Bay for beach bars and swimming
-
Cockleshell Bay for views of Nevis and local vibes
-
Or explore the island’s unique black-sand beaches, especially on the northern Atlantic coast
There’s nothing quite like the sound of waves lapping the shore while you unwind with a good book or a tropical drink in hand.
6. Dining at Serendipity
For an unforgettable dining experience, head to Serendipity, a charming restaurant perched above the harbour in Basseterre. The menu showcases Caribbean flavours with international twists — their seafood dishes in particular are exceptional.
The setting is romantic, the service warm and welcoming, and the views of the sea at sunset are the icing on the cake.
