Jeera rice is a tasty way to enjoy flavoursome rice and it is so easy to prepare. It goes well with any curry and is a nice way to jazz up rice using spices.
What you need:
- One and a half cups of rice (Basmati preferably)
- A tablespoon of cumin seeds
- A couple of bay leaves
- 1 1/2 tablespoon ghee (use coconut oil for healthier option)
- Half an onion finely chopped
- A teaspoon cumin powder
How to prepare the rice:
Wash rice thoroughly and soak in water for half an hour and then drain completely.
Meanwhile, heat the ghee or coconut oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and when they start to crackle add the onions and bay leaves. Cook till the onions are softer (around 3 minutes) and then add the rice.
Swirl the mixture around till everything is mixed properly and then add three cups of water.
Once it starts boiling add the cumin powder and turn down the heat and put a lid on your pan.
You will know when it is ready when the water has been completely absorbed. Check after ten minutes.
Once ready, put the rice into a serving dish and use a fork to separate it out.
Enjoy with a curry!
