FOUR PAWS, the global animal welfare charity, opened its UK office 15 years ago in a bid to ensure even more animals are treated with respect, empathy and understanding around the world. You may have noticed me sharing lots of information about them on my Social Media channels from time to time, their most recent project being re-homing Kaavan, the world’s loneliest elephant from a Zoo in Islamabad to Cambodia.
The image below brought me to tears as it was depicting the moment Kaavan saw another elephant after 8 years!
FOUR PAWS does ongoing work to fight for so many animals under direct human influence and with your help they have been able to stop retailers selling down feathers, work with Local Authorities to improve the plant-based offerings and joined other NGOs calling for an end to the commercial trade in wild animals. Before we look ahead to this year, FOUR PAWS UK Head of Communications Hannah Baker wants us to look back at the year that has just come to a close.
“Despite the challenges of 2020, so much was still achieved for animals. From new laws being introduced, to celebrity support of our calls to end the dog and cat meat trade in Southeast Asia and petition hand-ins at 10 Downing Street to 20 bears being rescued and taken to our species appropriate sanctuaries. The year saw that by revealing the suffering of these animals we were able to rescue them and protect them from future harm.”
So how can you help in 2021?
I have had so many messages on how people can help to do their bit for animal welfare in 2021 and it can be as simple as sharing a social media post, signing a petition, writing to your MP – all of these activities help to raise awareness of the animals that need our help.
One thing that does need IMMEDIATE help and which closes on 3 February 2021 is calling on the Government to end factory farming and over 36,000 have so far joined FOUR PAWS in highlighting how closely linked animal suffering and climate change are.
This petition is a call to action for the government to commit to end factory farming, by starting to phase out megafarms – of which there are around 700 in the UK. But this is not all. FOUR PAWS are also calling to reduce meat and dairy consumption by 50% by 2030.
FOUR PAWS UK needs your help to #LiveKinder and make this all possible, sign here.
However, it is not just all about petitions. By simply sharing a post on Twitter or Facebook, or engaging with their content on Instagram you are helping FOUR PAWS share their messages and widen the reach and audience that they are shown to.
If we want animals to be around for years to come we need to act NOW!
We can also embrace life changes which can be as simple as eating more plant-based food, not buying fur and adopting more eco-friendly habits.
If you are considering getting a pet, look at adopting instead of buying one. There are so many in rescues and shelters that need a loving home.
Some thing I am very passionate about educating on is to not visit venues that offer interactions with animals. Examples are riding elephants, walking lions, taking selfies with tigers and swimming with dolphins.
We can all #LiveKinder and help in small ways.
