5 Reasons we picked Costa Cálida – Región de Murcia for a family holiday

The Costa Calida is one of the lesser known tourist spots in Spain, and we picked it for our annual family holiday as we wanted to get an authentic Spanish experience without the usual crowds.

With three couples and three children in tow, we vacationed in Murcia, known as the garden of Spain, and here are 5 reasons why we picked it as our destination of choice:

1. Murcia’s great year-round climate

As Murcia is located in South-eastern Spain, it benefits from having warmer temperatures, which means winters are much milder! We were lucky to enjoy temperatures averaging 18 degrees celsius, making it ideal for young children as it broadened the number of outdoor activities we could do.

Most days we were in a light jacket and it also meant packing less winter clothes!

2. It’s a fabulous golf destination

Amongst our group were two keen golf connoisseurs who thoroughly enjoyed playing on three of Murcia’s 18-hole golf courses, which they found incredibly straightforward to book and said it suited golfers of all levels.

3. There are Fantastic beaches

Whilst the men went golfing, the ladies took the kids to the beach and there are so many different beaches to choose from, many of which have Blue Flag status for their calm, shallow waters, clean beaches and wide palm-lined promenades.

We really rated the beaches of Santiago de la Ribera with its wide promenade, as well as lots of lovely cafes and restaurants to get a bite to eat. We loved tucking into Tapas everyday!

It was also so much quieter than other Spanish destinations, making it ideal as a safer destination to go to if you want to avoid crowds and enjoy the space, tranquility and excellent vistas.

4. Great activities for kids

There are so many fantastic activities for kids to do to help keep them stay entertained. One we particularly loved was Go-Karting and there are so many venues. We went to  Go-Karts Mar Menor and it had a really big track size, was safe and overall great fun for both kids and adults!

As well as Go-karting other activities in Murcia that are family friendly are Crazy Golf (yes we are a golf mad family), Murcia Jump and visiting Tierra Natura, an animal nature park.

5. Easy to navigate and drive around

As we had booked a self-catering holiday we also hired two cars between us so that it was easy to go to the supermarkets to get essentials. We found having a car a really big benefit as it also made it simpler to get to and from restaurants, activities and just generally explore Murcia as much as possible. It was also cost effective compared to getting taxis everyday.

We picked up the car on arrival at the airport and dropped it off before flying back. Parking around Murcia was easy and simple with ample spaces and it was also a great way to be flexible as well as safe, avoiding public transport. This might be something you want to consider if you are planning a trip to Murcia in the near future.

We had a fantastic family holiday in Murcia full of wonderful memories and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of a Spanish escape in the new year once it is safe to travel again.
