Five facts about The Shard, my second home

It’s a running joke that The Shard, London, is my second home. I spend a lot of time there and it is no secret that it is my favourite London Landmark. It has redefined the London skyline and I always leave with a smile. Probably as a result of guzzling a few cocktails!

But how much do you know about this stunning piece of architecture? Well firstly, this 72-storey skyscraper was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, and  forms part of the Shard Quarter development.

Secondly, it is 1,016 ft high! The Shard is the tallest building in the United Kingdom, and the sixth-tallest building in Europe. It is also the second-tallest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom, after the concrete tower of the Emley Moor transmitting station.

Thirdly, did you know that GŎNG Bar, located on level 52 of the Shangri-La London Hotel at The Shard, is the highest hotel bar in Western Europe?

The views from GŎNG are just sublime and the perfect spot to sip on your favourite cocktail or enjoy a glass of bubbles.

Fourthly, did you know that there are offices located in The Shard? You can also rent a serviced desk on levels 24 and 25. Maybe Emma and I will in the future for The Social Media Tini 😉 A girl can have a dream right? For now, we will continue using our favourite restaurant and bar, Aqua Shard, as our strategy zone.

Lots of inspiration comes to us when we are here. Again it may be with the help of some beverages, but we are The Social Media Tini after all.

Lastly, did you know that 95% of the construction materials used for The Shard are recycled? How awesome is that! Also, the corners of the building are open and the shards do not touch, allowing the building to “breathe”.

Have you visited The Shard, either to spend the night or to enjoy one of the restaurants there?

About Binny

Hi, I'm Binny - a writer, dreamer and serial wanderluster with a love for Wildlife Conservation. I am originally from Kenya but I now live in London. 'Karibu' to Binny's Food and Travel! I regularly share my experiences eating out, cooking and travelling, both in the UK and globally, as well as educate on the plight of Wildlife. I am an ambassador for World Animal Protection and regularly support the work of The Born Free Foundation, Four Paws and Dreams Come True Charity. I love packing my bags and going off on adventures as one of the best things about travelling is the ability to just get lost in it. To set aside the maps and itineraries and just see where the road takes you, learning and evolving and living in the moment along the way. It's my goal to get swept off my feet as often as possible!
