How to plan the perfect Italian date night in!

For a special and fun date night in idea, and something different, why not plan to have an Italian themed night in!

First up, set the mood with some music. I recommend either Luciano Pavarotti or Andrea Bocelli, who are  undoubtedly the most iconic Italian opera singers with the most beautiful voices, perfect to set a romantic tone!  Stream them either on Spotify or on iTunes, or find a performance on YouTube that makes it feel like a proper performance.

Next up lets choose the wine. I’ve fallen in love with the Francone Barolo, which is a beautiful Barolo made from the Nebbiolo grapes from La Morra and Monforte, two of the five most prized cru-villages in Barolo DOCG. The grapes from La Morra bring richness and power, and this is balanced by Monforte’s elegance and freshness. This is a rich and deep Barolo, which complements classic Italian dishes.

You can purchase Francone Barolo online from Independent Wine Shop and I would highly recommend their 2015 edition which is a UK exclusive with only a few bottles left. It has excellent ageing potential and if you want to save buy a bottle of this wine to save for a few years, it is recommended to keep it until 2022, as it will continue to improve for 12-20 years.

Now let’s plan what food to indulge in on your date night! For starters, a simple, yet punchy salad of mozzarella, tomato and basil hits the spot, with generous drizzles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I like to add a few olives too, and enjoy this with a few sips of wine whilst listening to the soothing voices of Luciano Pavarotti or Andrea Bocelli.

For mains you can’t go wrong with pizza, whether you make it from scratch, order in from your local, or prepare a frozen one! We always have frozen pizzas in our freezer, just classic cheese and tomato, which we then garnish with fresh basil for some extra flavour once it is ready and out of the oven, in usually about 10 minutes! Perfection and ever so delicious! Not to mention, goes incredibly well with Barolo!

For dessert, Tiramisu is a must and I actually have the perfect recipe for it – in fact my first ever recipe on my blog and a firm favourite in our house! A recipe that will always be very special to me.
