Bar + Block Aldgate’s new limited-edition Winter Gin Bar

It’s the season for hot gin to warm up during the cold snap and I had the pleasure of trying some Sipsmith Hot Gins at Bar + Block’s limited edition Winter Gin Bar in Aldgate, which is a lovely bar and restaurant. It’s a pop up and so if you want to try the Hot Gin be sure to get there between 7th and 9th December.

I tried the Hot Mulled Sloe, which was a warming mix of Sipsmith Sloe Gin and spiced mulled cloudy apple juice garnished with a slice of orange. It was DELICIOUS – so much so that it went down really quickly and before I knew it I was on my 2nd one!

My partner in crime tried the Hot Winter G&T which was Sipsmith London Dry Gin, Sipsmith Sloe Gin and Sipsmith Tonic syrup topped with hot water and garnished with an orange slice.

We also dined at the restaurant, which specialises in steaks but also has a well rounded menu. We started with some Crispy Gnocchi Bites which were crispy potato gnocchi seasoned with Parmesan & truffle infused oil and topped with chopped parsley. Morsels of delight!

Being Indians whenever we see the word ‘Tandoori” we are instantly intrigued and so we tried the tandoori spiced chicken wings, which were cooked over charcoal and topped with coriander. Verdict? SO GOOD! The flavour in the marinade was spot on and the meat was cooked perfectly.

For mains I had a rather generous portion of Lemon & Thyme Chicken, which was half a chicken marinated in pepper, lemon and thyme, finished over charcoal then served with rocket, lemon & garlic mayo and French fries. It was so so good but I was defeated!

My dining partner had the Lamb Shoulder, which was a recommended dish for us, and the lamb shoulder had been slow cooked for 24 hours, finished over charcoal and served with garlic sautéed potatoes, cherry tomatoes, green beans and a rich Malbec sauce. It was devoured quickly and was really enjoyed and given top marks!

There is always room for dessert somehow, and when Sticky Toffee Pudding is on the menu its always a winner, especially when served with salted caramel ice cream. The dream combination!

We really enjoyed the festive pop up with the delicious hot gins, and had a really lovely meal at Bar+Block. The restaurant itself is spacious, the service is attentive without being intrusive and I loved the touch of an open kitchen at the back.

If you’re looking for a lovely place for a meal in Aldgate, I highly recommend it for some lovely grills.

I was a guest of Bar+Block and my meal was complimentary however all views and photos are my own.
