During the summer months there are so many fun things to do, especially when the weather gods are on your side. If you are looking for some inspiration on ideas for day trips from London, here are my top three.
Visit aromatic Lavender Fields
This summer I fell in love with the Mayfield Lavender Fields with their stunning rows upon rows of fragrant lavender glistening in the sunlight. For a second you would be forgiven for imagining that you are in Provence, the lavender capital of the world but in reality its located just off Croydon and absolutely picturesque.
It is so aromatic, there are lots of lovely picnic tables where you can enjoy lavender cider, lavender ice cream or cakes. There is also a shop where you can buy a vast range of lavender related products.
The entry to the lavender farm costs £2 per person (kids free) and the best time to visit is between June and September when the lavender is in full bloom.
There is a car park at Mayfield Lavender Farm and parking costs £2.
If you want to get there by public transport you can take the train from London Bridge to Tattenham Corner and depart at Woodmansterne. At Woodmansterne you need to take the 166 bus and get off at Oaks Park. The bus drops you right at the entrance of Mayfield Lavender Farm.
Alternatively there is also a lavender farm with the added bonus of Sunflowers located in Hitchin. It can be found on Cadwell Farm, Arlesey Rd, Ickleford, Hitchin, SG5 3UA. or the closest train station is Hitchin rail.
Open until the end of August, 10am-5pm. £6, £3 under-14s, free for under-fives.
Visit a ‘Pick Your Own’ Farm
There is something so deeply satisfying about picking your own fruit and vegetables and it is such a fun activity to do with the family too. There are two PYO farms close to London, The Parkside Farm in Enfield and the Hawkswick Lodge Farm in St Albans. You have to check fruit availability before visiting though as they sometimes close early.
Canoe along The Thames
For something a little bit more adventurous, why not canoe along the River Thames. We went on an ‘Impulse Adventure’ curated by Vespucci Adventures, and you will be given a map and free reign of the Canadian Canoe.
It is lots of fun and a great activity to do with your friends, especially when you have pleasant weather.
