I love finding quirky things to do as little day trips or excursions from London, and so when I was invited to try one of Vespucci Adventures curated trips, I was intrigued. It involved a short train journey to Maidenhead, followed by a short scenic walk to Cookham before setting off on a Canadian canoe trip from the Ferry Pub for four hours, on one of their newly launched ‘Impulse Adventures.’ The Canoe is hired from H20 Adventures, who drop off and pick up the Canoe for you!
The Impulse Adventures are spur of the moment one or two day adventures that include walks, cycle rides, canoe trips and other adventures in some of the most scenic locations within reach of London, the vast majority accessible by train. You can download their information filled adventure packs for free which have all the relevant information you need such as travel and kit suggestions to recommended pub, picnic spots and points of interest. It is then up to you to go at your own pace!
I had never canoed before and so was quite excited. It also happened to be the hottest day of the year and so we were pretty brave! Our specific adventure was called Flow River, Flow, and was a scenic canoe down the River Thames, passing lovely areas such as Bray along the way, and catching glimpses of Cliveden House before our final destination, Windsor.
It was really serene being on the river, and so tranquil too. It was the perfect way to spend the day, passing amazing yachts and motor boats along the way, as well as experiencing going in and out of Locks, which was so fascinating. We even managed to get locked in to a Lock alongside some yachts and bigger boats which was so fun!
We made two stops during our journey, one for a fabulous picnic lunch organised according to your dietary requirements, and which we thoroughly enjoyed on a lovely picnic spot, as well as an additional stop to go wild swimming. As tempting as it was to dive in to the river to cool off, I decided to relax on the canoe instead as it was lovely being able to sit on it.
Canoeing as a beginner is fun but quite tough, and so prepared for your arms to be fully worked out as it is quite strenuous! It is so much fun though, and if you have good company time just slips away and before you know it you’ve canoed quite a distance!
What was lovelier was meeting the friendly people on other boats along the way as well as just taking in the beautiful surroundings, which in the summer are simply stunning.
In total we canoed around 3600 strokes, covered approximately 7.5km and crossed 4 weirs! I was seriously impressed with the distance we covered and all the gorgeous places we managed to see whilst out on the canoe, as well as the swans and families of ducks we passed along the way.
It is a great activity to do with your family or friends, and each canoe takes 2 people, which is ideal. The canoeing provides hours of fun, great things to see along the way, and is a great alternative day out from London, especially when we have such great weather. I highly recommend it as a fun excursion and a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of London.
