Despite living in North Finchley for so many years, I hadn’t reviewed any of my local eateries and that is all going to change as I have discovered some fantastic local gems, which in my opinion, are worth the “detour” to North London for!
One such restaurant is San Giorgio, a delightful Italian restaurant that I very recently tried. Its charming exterior had always intrigued me every time we drove past and it wasn’t till I saw the menu online that I was finally drawn in. The food is local to Rimini in Italy and trust me on this one – just book!
The service from start to finish was truly exemplary, and the interiors of the spacious restaurant were stunning with a romantic ambience, enhanced by the classic Italian songs playing in the background.
An Italian dinner for me is never complete without a glass of red wine, and so we tried the Della Casa, which is a Sangiovese and Montepulciano with a soft red fruit finish. It was fantastic and really easy to drink.
For starters Amit chose the Prawn Cocktail, which came in an impressively generous portion than we are normally accustomed to and was absolutely divine.
I went for Bruschetta with garlic mushrooms and blue cheese, which was sublime!
The combination of the garlic mushrooms and the blue cheese sauce was heavenly.
For mains Amit picked the Polla alla griglia, which is a grilled chicken breast served with grilled vegetables, rocket and drizzled with red pesto dressing – what’s not to love? He clearly did as he totally devoured it.
I might have found the best Gnocchi in London and I am not even joking. I stuck to my love for blue cheese and tried the Gnocchi al radicchio & formaggio. With the fresh red leaf chicory, the crunchy walnuts and that decadent blue cheese sauce I was in Gnocchi heaven. It even had a thin parmesan crust which was the “icing’ on the cake! I am already plotting my return as I need some more of that delicious plate of Gnocchi in my life!
At this point of our meal we were kicking ourselves for not having tried San Giorgio earlier but it is now firmly our favourite Italian in our area.
Not one to say no to dessert, I indulged in Affogato Al Caffe served with a hot shot of espresso coffee. It was also absolutely scrumptious and the perfect way to end a fantastic meal.
Everything from the beautiful presentation of the food, the fresh flavours, the impeccable service and just the lovely atmosphere in the restaurant was perfect and I can see myself celebrating special occasions with friends and family here. Plus there were other desserts on the menu that sounded amazing and so I need excuses to come back!
