Book review: The Lyle’s Golden Syrup Cookbook

A tin of Lyle’s Golden Syrup evokes so many memories for me and it is always a staple in our kitchen cupboard. It is one of the iconic brands which is the nation’s favourite since 1883 and is easily recognisable in a supermarket shelf.

Popularly known as “Goldie.”it has always been a key ingredient for my flapjacks and porridge.

I was recently sent the Lyle’s Golden Syrup Cookbook to review and was at first expecting lots of recipes for cakes and biscuits and so was totally surprised to find savoury recipes included in the beautifully  illustrated book too.

Ranging from recipes for marinades, main dishes and some inspiration for meals on the BBQ too, the book is beautifully written accompanied with superb photography.

There are also some classic recipes for breakfast and brunch, biscuits and traybakes, pudding, tarts and desserts, cakes and teatime treats and sweet bites.

I tried 2 recipes from the book. The first one I chose was Double Chocolate Flapjacks. I usually just make plain simple flapjacks so was really intrigued by how these would turn out.

Safe to say these were so delicious and a lovely change to our usual batch. The recipe was so easy to follow and the cooking time was just 25 minutes with 10 minutes prep.

The second recipe I tried was perfect morning porridge and it was the best way to start the day.

I am keen to try some of the marinade recipes and particularly have my eyes on the Roast Parsnips with Sticky Wholegrain Mustard Glaze.

The book is full of pleasant surprises of both traditional and contemporary recipes which are so simple to follow and make. The sweet recipes would be great fun to make with kids and introduce Lyle’s Golden Syrup into their lives too!

What I learned is that there are so many ways to use Lyle’s Golden Syrup as an ingredient. Far more than I had thought initially so I will definitely be using it more in savoury recipes inspired by this book.

I love this book. It is such a pleasure to flick through and find something special that catches your eye to make and definitely one to have on your bookshelf, especially if you are a Lyle’s Golden Syrup fan! It has plenty of ideas for everyone, whether you love sweet dishes, savoury or are vegetarian or a non-vegetarian.

The Lyle’s Golden Syrup® Cookbook is published by Simon & Schuster. The book retails at £20.00 and is available online from Amazon and in-store from all major literary retailers.
