2014 Masterchef champion, Ping Coombes, held a masterclass for bloggers at Chi Kitchen, located in Debenhams Oxford street.
We were taught how to make the famous Malaysian Roti Canai and a Kerabu salad while we nibbled on canapés that included sushi and popcorn shrimp, served in true masterchef style.
She demonstrated the techniques of flipping and tossing the roti as well as talked through how to make the dough. I was surprised to learn that condensed milk is an ingredient and keen to try this at home. The dough is really easy to make and you have to let it rest for 6 hours.
For the masterclass, Ping and her assistant, head chef at Chi Kitchen, had prepared some dough in advance which was rolled up into balls.
They showed us how to roll out the dough, flatten it into circular disks, flip them in the air and then fry it in a pan. Once they were ready they were smashed up and served. We even to to try one with bananas in it and it was out of this world.
A few bloggers had a go at flipping the rotis and we then settled down on a long table to an amazing selection of food from Chi Kitchen.
The food was absolutely divine, just the right amount of spice and very flavoursome. It took me down memory lane back to my trip to Malaysia a few years ago.
We had marriage laksa, nasi goreng, beef and some amazing desserts, including Green tea crème brûlée with cornflake ice-cream, which was my favourite.
The prices on the menu are very reasonable and it is the perfect spot to grab lunch, dinner, bubble tea or amazing cocktails while shopping on Oxford street. There is also a branch in Birmingham if you are located there.
Ping also has a book coming out soon which has lots of fantastoic recipes so keep an eye out for that.
