Gymkhana – Indian food at its best!

This is my first restaurant review on Binny’s Kitchen and what a restaurant to start with!

I had super high expectations for this restaurant and not only did it meet my expectations, it went over and above them!

We had booked Gymkhana for our 5 year wedding anniversary. If you are planning to visit on a weekend do book in advance to avoid disappointment!

We walked in at around 8:20pm and the restaurant was buzzing. We were met with enthusiasm and a big smile and made our way to the bar while our table was being prepared.

The barman gave us his attention straight away. I went for a mojito and Amit went for the Quinine Sour, which was Gin and Tonic with ginger, curry leaves, egg whites and lemon. This was such an amazing cocktail and really easy to drink. My mojito was perfect too.

We were then ushered to a beautiful corner table downstairs and immediately a really friendly waiter came over to us and explained the menu to us.

The menu is split into Gymkhana Bar, Nashta, Kebabs & Tikkas and Game and Chops for starters. For mains they have curries and sabzis and sides.

We went for the Gol Guppas and the Cassava, Lentil and Potato papads from the Gymkhana Bar section as well as the Lassoni wild tiger prawns with red pepper chutney and the Beetroot Hari Kebas from the Kebabs & Tikkas section.

Every single bite was tantalising and my favourites were definitely the Beetroot Hari Kebab and the prawns. Gol Guppas were delicious too! The starters came with a chutney tray which were the perfect accompaniments to the dishes. There was a mango chutney, a mint chutney and a shrimp chutney.

For mains we went for a traditional Chicken butter masala with a bread basket and a side of pomegranate and mint raita. The raita was so rich and indulgent – almost as good as a dessert!

The curry was really scrumptious and the gravy was on point! The naan breads were epic. They were cooked in a tandoor and were nice and fluffy.

We devoured this dish and were ready for dessert. We went for the Ras Malai and the Saffron Falooda. The saffron falooda was so indulgent and amazing and definitely the best falooda I have had in a long time.

The Ras Malai was absolutely gorgeous. By this point we were both super stuffed and our tummies were so happy 🙂

The restaurant then totally surprised us with some more sweet delights which consisted of beautiful dishes of a chocolate treat especially for our anniversary with a decorated plate, some chai tea doughnuts and some shakar para!! We had all this with Bombay chai which is cutting chai, and were utterly blown away.

After this we were unable to move but no doubt we both felt we had the best Indian meal in London in all our years here!

The restaurant itself is very nostalgicly decorated with vintage cricket photos reminscent of British Raj India. There is a private dining room available if you have a super special occasion to celebrate too.

I would give the ambience and overall buzz in the restaurant a 5/5. The restaurant is beautiful and the interiors really majestic.

The staff are friendly, attentive and always smiling! They were really smart and never too far away from the table.

The service was efficient without you feeling that they are trying to speed up your dining experience. At no point did we feel we were being rushed at all!

The food was tasty, served fresh and hot and definitely a 5/5 for authenticity and a lovely, varied choice on the menu. The food was always beautifully presented too – like a work of art. They also have tasting menus availble. We went for the a la carte menu.

They made us feel really special and it was just an incredible experience.

I will definitely be visiting Gymkhana again! It has now taken over as my new favourite restaurant in London!  If you haven’t tried Gymkhana it is a definite must!
